Before & After School Programs
After School Live
- Academic Enhancement— Program focuses on capturing and building student's strengths and improving weaker areas with innovative instructional methods such as using existing resource materials and giving the student hands on experience in various fields, such as computer technology. Math and reading programs enhance the school curriculum.
- Resiliency— Building opportunities and other personal skills that help students identify and avoid behaviors and situations that put them at risk. Support group counseling, mentoring, character education and substance abuse and/or violence prevention programming are tools used to build the necessary steps for improvement.
- Relationship Building Activities Adult role models will help the student's relationship with adults, the school, and the community.
- Relative and Recreational Activities— Field trips, arts, music, and physical activities will increase the student's interest in the world beyond the youth's local neighborhood. Strong programs will be developed with local libraries and museums.
- Creative Involvement— Families are brought into the program for educational, social, parenting and life skills enrichment. An open door policy welcomes adult and other family members into the classrooms. Open house meetings give parents an opportunity to observe the program at work and to meet with staff.
After School Live! Offers additional programs that provide assistance to students who have been truant, suspended, or expelled; extra learning opportunities to foster critical thinking skills, persistence and other positive work habits, developed with hand-on activities such as computer clubs, chess club, poetry contests, and book clubs among others.

Trojan Learning Center/EAP Tutoring
This year, starting October 1st, we will be combining the Trojan Learning Center (TLC) and the Educational Assistance Program (EAP). By combining the programs, we will be able to offer both the educational and recreational components of our programs to all participants. All students will have snack and homework help for the first half hour of the program each day. At the conclusion of homework help, the students will be split into two groups. One group will go to tutoring and the other group will go to TLC. Half way through the program, the groups will switch. The community partners will continue to work with the TLC portion of the program, and the EAP tutoring will continue to focus on Math and Reading. Each of the two programs will have the same components of the past. The difference this year is that all students can participate in both programs on the same day rather than having to choose. Students will all board the bus at the same time and have the same registration forms. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call us at (814) 533-5570 ext 1009.

The Trojan Learning Center
"Helping Young Students at the Crossroads of Life"
Brought to the Greater Johnstown Middle School through the Pennsylvania Department of Education's 21st Century Community Learning Center Project The Trojan learning Center is a three-hour program, beginning after school. The program operations follow the school calendar.
The Trojan Learning Center, a program approved by the board of directors and the administration of the Greater Johnstown School District, is conducted under a contract with the district by the Cambria County Child Development Corp., working with the Superintendent of Schools Barbara Parkins.
Academic Enhancement: Offering a tutoring program centering on language, reading, arts, and math and designed to help Middle School students achieve higher scores in core subjects, thus meeting academic requirements established in the federal "No Child Left Behind Act" and attaining the proficiency goals of standardized testing, including the PSSA tests. The PSSA tests are administered to Middle School students in grades 6th-8th. Proficiency performers will project future abilities to achieve required standards in high school testing and can serve as a basis for helping decide career paths for adult life. Communications skills also are honed, helping building better relationships with teachers and other adults. In short, the student learns young.
Character Education: Programs designed to emphasize the student's strengths and build self-esteem. Mentoring, substance abuse and/or violence prevention programming are the tools used to attain improvement. The students learn to identify and avoid behavior patterns and situations that put them at risk.
Parental Involvement: Families are invited into the program for educational, social, parenting and life skills enrichment. An open door policy welcomes adults and other family members into the classrooms. Open house meetings give parents an opportunity to observe the program at work and to meet with staff.
Artistic and Cultural Activities: Art, music, physical activities and field trips will increase the student's interest in the world beyond the youth's local neighborhood. Strong programs with cooperative community support groups help the student advance. And programs have been developed with local librarians and museums.
The Trojan Learning Center offers additional programs that provide assistance to students; extra learning opportunities to foster critical thinking skills, persistence and other positive work habits, developed with hands-on activities such as computer clubs, chess clubs, poetry contests and book clubs among others.
