Philosophy of Education

The philosophy of the Greater Johnstown School District has as its primary goal the attainment of maximum individual development and adjustment of each student for effective living in a democratic society. A democratic society is founded on the worth of individuals and their unique value and contribution to society. Therefore, we of the Greater Johnstown School District are committed to the philosophy that we shall provide the best educational opportunity consistent with available resources for all of the children of the residents in the district. It shall be our resolve that students will be provided the opportunity to experience success and sustained effort will be made to develop individual student potential. It is our belief that education is a goal reaching and problem solving process which can help the learner develop a higher self concept and a broader social economic horizon.

We support the philosophy that the Greater Johnstown School District has the responsibility to foster the concepts of inquiry, self discipline, critical thinking and flexibility. It is our basic goal to help each student achieve a level of intellectual and social literacy commensurate with his or her capabilities.

Dedicated School Board

These Dedicated leaders have helped guide Greater Johnstown into the 21st Century of education. Our high school is a state-or-the-art facility that provides students with a quality curriculum in a modern and safe environment. Our East Side & West Side elementary schools provide a foundation for learning that is built upon at our middle school. Johnstown also proudly features extracurricular programs in athletics, Music, and throughout the community.

The current board has 56 years of combined service. Estimating that board meetings average about 25 hours per year, these members have combined for 1,400 hours of service. That total doesn't include the numerous hours our directors spend supporting the school district at after-school events and other activities!
