East Side Elementary School

Welcome to East Side Elementary!

Please take time to visit the new site. The East Side Elementary School was renovated in 1997 and houses approximately 760 students. The grade levels served include 4-year-old kindergarten through fifth grade. The networked computer system affords students the opportunity to experience the use of computers, as well as computer-assisted instruction.

In addition to basic skills in reading, writing and computation, the faculty has implemented a learning environment supported by cooperative learning with the Success for All programs, originally developed at Johns Hopkins University. This program has had a positive impact on student achievement.

  1. Success for All Reading is a comprehensive language program designed to ensure the success of students throughout the elementary grades. The program is designed to prevent reading problems from occurring. The emphasis is on reading, writing/language arts and early childhood. It provides tutoring in reading for at-risk first-graders and the implementation of sound classroom strategies for each teacher. A family support component, which includes a system of interventions and parent workshops, is provided to prevent problems.
  2. Math Wings is based on the most up-to-date research in effective mathematics instruction and assessment as reflected by the NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) Curriculum and Evaluation Standards and on the principals of cooperative learning. Math Wings actively involves students as they learn and communicate about mathematics. It reflects a balance between the development of mathematics concepts and the introduction and maintenance of mathematics skills explored through real-world and process-type problem solving experiences. The Math Wings program involves all students in a combination of whole class, small team, and individualized activities.
