7th Grade Boys Basketball Go Undefeated and Capture Title

Congratulations to the 7th grade boys basketball team on capturing first place in the Ligonier Valley Junior High Basketball Tournament in the 7th grade division.  They were the only undefeated team in the entire tournament, including the 8th and 9th grade brackets.

In the first game, The Trojans tipped off against Derry. Johnstown out-gunned the WPIAL squad 48-22. Connor Kobal led the way by playing hard-nosed defense, causing many turnovers that started the Trojans off from the start.  Terrelle Jones led all scorers with 19 points, Jeremy Updyke added 17 points, Zack Odum 5 points, Rakwon Hinton 4 points, LesPaul Buchko 2 points, and Tyler Fraska finished out the scoring with 1 point.

In second game of the round robin tournament, Johnstown destroyed host Ligonier Valley by a score of 51–22. Jeremy Updyke switching positions, due to a teammate illness, and led all scores with 17 points,  Rawkon Hinton added 10 points, Zachary Odum then started as a shooting guard and dumped in 9 points, Connor Kobal 7 points, Tyler Fraska 4 points, Darnell Barnette 2 points, and Jordan Staicer and Stephen Frazier had 1 point rounded out the scoring for the Trojans.

The championship game again matched the Trojans with the squad from Derry. The boys from Johnstown again controlled the tempo of the entire game, dominated the entire game and knocked off Derry by a score of 47-29. Jeremy Updyke again played center and continued to be a force to reckon with as he scored 24 points, played great defense and cleaned the glass for double digit rebounds.  LesPaul Buchko, playing hard, did a tremendous job boxing out to help out his teammates keep Derry form getting few second chance opportunities. He also chipped in 4 points. Rakwon Hinton ran the offense like a veteran leading to a lot of easy run-outs for the Trojans. He pumped in  5 points, all free throws, to go with his court leadership. Connor Kobal ignited the Trojans with his defense which helped turn several steals into easy fast break points.  Connor added 7 points to his defensive effort. Zack Odum again got the starting role and played well as he chipped in with two points along with Scott Stephens, Stephen Frazier, and Tyler Fraska.

Some Trojans took home some additional hardware besides the Championship trophy as Rakwon Hinton and Connor Kobal who were selected for the all-tourney team. Jeremy Updyke capped off his tremendous weekendby winning the Most Valuable Player award in the 7th grade division.

Coach Mikesic stated he is very proud of his team and wants to congratulate them on a successful season that included two first place finishes in tournament play as well as only losing 1 game on the year.The guys did a magnificent job throughout the entire year gaining the fundamentals of basketball and everyone is looking for big things in the future.

 

Trojans Finish Regular Season 13-1

Johnstown 52, Somerset 45

Congratulations to the 7th grade boys basketball team on defeating Somerset 52-45 to cap a great regular season. Rakwon Hinton assessed the defense and handled the ball with minimal turnovers.  Connor Kobal was the spark plug of the team playing hard-nosed defense creating many turnovers. LesPaul Buchko boxed out and pulled down many rebounds. Jeremy Updyke dominated the court and led all scorers with 25 points. Terrell Jones was the enforcer inside and chipped in with 18 points,  Rakwon Hinton added 6 points, and Connor Kobal finished the scoring with 3 points. The boys ran the floor with confidence and transitioned the floor to many easy lay-ups. The entire team played extremely well. Way to go boys!  

Coach Mikesic and his team would like to thank Mr. Buchko, Mr. Frontino, Mr. Dunmyer, Mr. Brian, all the teachers, staff, cheerleaders, parents, and fans for their support throughout the year.  This team practiced and played with a lot of heart and determination that led to such a great season. The team ended their regular season with 13 wins and only 1 loss as they move on to post – season tournament play.

 

Johnstown 61,  Conemaugh Valley 29

Congratulations to the 7th grade boys basketball team on defeating Conemaugh Valley 61-29.  Connor Kobal was the spark plug of the team playing hard-nosed defense creating many turnovers. Jeremy Updyke dominated the court and led all scorers with 23 points. Terrell Jones chip in with 8 points,  Rakwon Hinton 6 points, LesPaul Buchko, Jordan Stacier, Zack Odum, and Darnell Barnette added 5 points each, Stephen Frazier 4 points, and Tyler Fraska finished with 2 points.  The boys ran the floor with confidence and transitioned with many easy lay-ups. The entire team played extremely well. Way to go boys!  Keep working hard and focusing on fundamentals!

 

Johnstown Knocks Off Forest Hills

Congratulations to the 7th grade boys basketball team on defeating Forest Hills 47-37. Jeremy Updyke owned the court and led all scorers with 20 points. Terrell Jones chip in with 12 points, Connor Kobal 8 points, Rakwon Hinton 3 points, LesPaul Buchko and Jordan Stacier finished with 2 points apiece. The boys ran the floor with confidence and transitioned with many easy lay-ups. The entire team played strategic offense and hard-nosed defense. Way to go boys!  Keep working hard and focusing on the prize: beating Somerset on Friday.  Come cheer the boys on to victory during their last two home games this Thursday and Friday.

Congratulations to the 7th grade boys basketball team on defeating North Star 48 - 12.  Terrell Jones and Zach Odum led all scorers with 8 points apiece.  Jeremy Updyke chip in with 7 points, Connor Kobal 6 points, Darnelle Barnette 5 points, Rakwon Hinton and Scott Stephens 4 points each, Stephen Frazier 3 points, and Jordan Stacier finished with 2 points. The boys ran the floor with confidence and transitioned with many easy lay-ups. The entire team played strategic offense and hard-nosed defense. Way to go boys!  Keep working hard and focusing on fundamentals.
