Robert M. Varner
Head Coach
Coach Varner is entering his 3rd year as the head boys varsity soccer coach and his 9th year overall coaching soccer in the Greater Johnstown Area. Coach Varner is well know for his desire to make young men see the importance of a quality education as well as working as a team, and providing them leadership skills that they will need in their future.
His previous coaching experience includes being the head coach of the Jr. High Soccer program here at Greater Johnstown from 2006 until 2008, a Hilltop AYSO League coach from 2002 to 2008, a winter indoor YMCA high school league coach from 2008 to the present, and as assistant head coach/player agent for the Greater Johnstown Youth League for 1994 until 2004.
Last year’s team was a young team that included 10 freshman and only 3 seniors who graduated. The team made great strides and improvement over the season which has Coach Varner expecting bigger things this upcoming season as his players are working very hard to be successful this year. The 2011 team has returning key players from that 2010 team that includes leading scorer Lucas Gunby.
Coach Varner is a 1975 graduate of Bedford High School where he participated in soccer & wrestling. After graduation he attended Electronic technology Institute in Cleveland Ohio. He is currently employed as an electrical mechanic in the Great Johnstown School District.
Coach Varner resides in the West End section of Johnstown with his wife Terry and their 2 sons.
