Neil Cobaugh

Varsity Boys Basketball Head Coach

Returning To coach the Trojans for his third year is Neil Cobaugh, who, last year led the Trojans to a 23 – 2 record.  That record includes: the UPJ Mountain Cat Tournament, the 2nd straight LHAC Championship & a 3rd straight District VI AAA Championship.  The Trojans are 44 – 6 in the last 2 years with Cobaugh at the helm.  Under Cobaugh the Trojans had the highest scoring average for any team of any level while also holding their opponents to the second fewest points in District 6. Coach Cobaugh was also named the LHAC men’s basketball Coach of the Year for a second consecutive year in 2010-2011.

Coach Cobaugh is entering his 15th season coaching varsity basketball here in the Greater Johnstown Area.  His previous coaching experience includes Greater Johnstown Vo-Tech (1997-1998), Westmont Hilltop (1998-2008), and Greater Johnstown High School (2008-2009) were he served as an Assistant Coach and as an Associate Head Coach under former Trojan head Coach Dave Roman Jr.  During Coach Cobaugh’s coaching career, he helped developed players that won 6 District VI Championships and 4 Laurel Highlands Conference Championships.  During his tenure at Westmont Hilltop, Coach held a winning percentage of over 700.  Coach Cobaugh has helped develop 3 All-State players in basketball while also helping 7 players further their athletic and academic careers in college at the NCAA Division 1, 2, and 3 levels.

Coach Cobaugh graduated from Ferndale Area High School in 1996 where he participated in football, basketball, and baseball.  He garnered several athletic records and athletic awards during his high school playing days.  Coach Cobaugh went on to attend St. Francis University in Loretto, PA where he earned a bachelor’s of science degree in education.

Coach Cobaugh is a Learning Support Instructor right here at Greater Johnstown High School where he is in his 7th year of teaching.  Coach Cobaugh also coaches football where he is the Associate Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator for the District VI AAA Champion Trojans and the Head Boys Track and Field Coach for the last 5 years.  He has spent the last 9 years coaching football here at Greater Johnstown. 

Coach Cobaugh resides in Woodmont with his wife Brooke.

 

William (Trey) Sharpe

Assistant Coach

William Sharpe is entering his first year coaching basketball at Greater Johnstown High School but he is no newcomer to the Johnstown High and the Trojan Basketball History. Coach Sharp graduated from Johnstown in 2004.  Coach “Trey” Sharpe participate and earned a varsity letter in basketball all three of his high school years here as a Trojan. During coach’s senior season as a Trojan, Johnstown won the Laurel Highlands Conference Championship, the District VI AAA Championship, and advance to the second round of the PIAA state playoffs.

Coach Sharpe continued his basketball playing career and education at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.  Coach “Trey” earned a degree in Communications from UPJ.  During his career at University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, he was an integral part of a graduating class that, when they came in, is now holding the record for most wins in school history, as they went on to win more than 20 games in their four years of playing basketball.  During his junior and senior year, Coach Sharpe was nominated as team captain and was also the starting point guard.  He led his team to win the West Virginia Athletic Conference his junior year and West Virginia Athletic Conference Tournament senior year.  In both Coach Sharpe’s junior and senior seasons at UPJ, they were picked to play in the Division II National Basketball Tournament. Coach Sharpe is also the holder of the All-Time Assist record at UPJ.

After college, Coach Sharpe joined the Harrisburg Horizon Basketball team, which is a semi-pro team in Harrisburg.  In Coach’s first year, he averaged only 8pts, but during his second year and after getting used to the program, he started at the point guard position and went on to average 15pts per game. In Coach Sharpe’s both years as a Horizon his team went on to make it to the playoffs.

Coach William Sharpe works at Assist Health Care, as a Therapeutic Staff Support (TSS), where he helps children with behavior problems in the classrooms and in the community.
