Trojan College Access
The Trojan College Access Program is a Scholarship Fund established to assist our students in furthering their education.
Wouldn't it be great if we could target our contributions to those causes which are most likely to make a difference in people's lives, as well as help the long-term economic success of the recipient's local community? The Trojan College Access Program is just such a cause. The Trojan College Access Program was established to assist our students in furthering their education beyond high school. Starting in seventh grade, we will begin enhancing student awareness of post-secondary education and the difference it can make in improving their lives. Our Program will stress the importance of doing well academically in school, and will include college visitations as well as mailings from the colleges. We have partnered with six local colleges to assist us in developing and conducting these awareness programs. These colleges are Mount Aloysius College in Cresson, PA; St. Francis University in Loretto, PA; Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, PA; The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, and Cambria-Rowe Business College, all located in Johnstown. The awareness programs will be continuous through the twelfth grade.
The Trojan College Access Program was established to:
Provide awareness of:
- The importance of doing well academically
- Advantages of a college education
Exposure to online resources:
- Researching colleges
- Information on SAT/ACT exams
- Information on grants, loans, and scholarships
Provide services to students interested in post-secondary education — college, university, technical, and trade schools
- Financial awareness
- College admissions counseling
- Parent advising
- Tutoring services
- Scholarship services
- College retention program
We have created the Trojan College Access Center to assist our students in visiting and researching post-secondary schools online: assisting our students and their parents in finding information on loans, grants, and scholarships; assisting students in registering for SAT/ACT exams; providing SAT prep courses; providing advisory services to students and their parents; providing tutoring services in core subjects to students; and providing retention-related services to our graduates enrolled in post-secondary schools. While many of these tasks are traditionally done by guidance counselors, the additional burdens placed on them by No Child Left Behind legislation have resulted in too many important things "falling through the cracks,: especially for our most-needy students.
Last, but not certainly not least, the Trojan College Access Program is a scholarship fund, designed to provide financial assistance to our graduates who are enrolled in a post secondary institution. The economic vitality of the Greater Johnstown area is directly linked to the level of education achieved by its citizens. We believe the Trojan College Access Program will have a major impact on increasing the education levels of the Greater Johnstown High School graduates. The increase in education will ultimately translate into a better quality of life for our graduates, economic gains for our community, and a decrease in social costs related to unemployment and underemployment.
Our Mission
To increase awareness in our students of the advantages of post-secondary education, and to encourage and enable these students to pursue and complete such education.
