Guidance
The Greater Johnstown School District Guidance Department is concerned with the academic, career, social and emotional development of all students in relation to their total school experience. Through the support of peers, parents, educators and the community, the Guidance Department will implement developmental services designed to improve the quality of life for all students, ensuring their positive impact on society. The ultimate outcome is for students to maximize their individual potentials and to acquire the skills to meet their individual goals. This includes a vision and plan for the future, and the development of those qualities or character that will have a positive effect upon their lives.
Response to Intervention
Response to Intervention is an ongoing process of using student performance and other data to guide instructional and intervention decisions. Response to Intervention is based on the following core principles:
- We can effectively teach all children.
- Intervene early.
- Use a problem-solving method to make decisions within a multi-tier model.
- Use research-based, scientifically validated interventions/instruction to the extent available.
- Monitor student progress to inform instruction.
- Use data to make decisions.
-
Use assessment for different purposes.
- Screening applied to all children to identify those who are not making progress at expected rates.
- Diagnostics to determine what children can and cannot do in important academic and behavioral domains.
- Progress monitoring to determine if academic or behavioral interventions are producing desired effects.
