January: Winter Driving

Winter in Pennsylvania can mean rapidly changing weather and road conditions. If you don’t have to drive during a storm, don’t. If you have to drive, make sure you pack an emergency kit and drive appropriately for the conditions. Learn more about winter driving and what to pack in an emergency kit at www.DriveSafePA.org.  Information on PennDOT’s operations, like how we treat different types of storms, and other winter facts, is available at www.dot.state.pa.us/winter.

Recent Laws Signed to Enhance Highway Safety

In an effort to enhance safety on Pennsylvania roads, Governor Tom Corbett recently signed two measures into law that affect drivers of all ages. One law changes the Vehicle Code involving graduated driver licensing requirements, passenger restrictions for junior drivers and passenger restraint laws. The other law prohibits drivers from using an Interactive Wireless Communication Device (IWCD) to send, read or write a text-based communication while his or her vehicle is in motion. The new teen driver and seat-belt rules take effect on Dec. 24, 2011 and the law prohibiting text-based communication while driving goes into effect March 8, 2012. For more information on both of these laws, visit the PennDOT website at www.dot.state.pa.us and look at the fact sheets under "News & Media."
