JHS Curriculum

Welcome to the Greater Johnstown High School, home of the Trojans. Greater Johnstown High School offers a full range of educational programs from traditional Academics to Technology and Vocational education. As we move into the next millennium, we are looking to add even more programs and expand existing ones. We are dedicated to the idea of building articulations between J.H.S. and our local and regional colleges, universities and specialized training schools. It will be an exciting time and we do hope that you can become an active participant in our growth. Johnstown High School is steeped in the traditions and pride that come from graduating over 50,000 very successful students.

Currently, GJHS has five established Academy programs that offer a variety of programs to help our students compete in today's global economy. They are: Arts and Communications, Business Enterprise, Health and Human Services, Engineering and Manufacturing Technology, and the Ninth Grade Success Academy.

ARTS AND COMMUNICATIONS
The Arts and Communications Academy promotes and develops career opportunities with a concentration on performing arts, visual arts, graphic arts, and communication technologies. The program at Greater Johnstown High School offers courses of study which include challenging academic and skill oriented courses. Students have the opportunity to transition from high school directly into a college or university, technical or trade school, the military, or the world of work.
  • World Language: The World Language Pathway provides students the opportunity to communicate in languages other than English, to gain knowledge and understanding of diverse cultures, to connect with other disciplines and acquire information, to develop insight into the nature of language and culture, and to participate in multilingual communities at home and abroad.
  • Art: Students interested in Art as a career choice have two options. In the Traditional Art strand, students will study color, design, drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and crafts such as batik, weaving, pottery and strained glass. In the Commercial Art strand, students will study drawing, design, color, typography, computer graphics, cartooning and digital photography.
  • Music: The Music Pathway offers opportunities in various musical careers. Offered performance opportunities include marching band, concert band, orchestra, jazz band, girl's chorus, mixed chorus, chorale and instrumental or vocal lessons. Other courses include music technology and theory or music appreciation.
  • Communications Technology: Students learn to apply knowledge and skills in the communication fields. Instruction is provided, beginning with basic skills, in a variety of areas associated with communications such as performing arts and telecommunications. Instruction includes computer animation, multimedia, web page design, satellite technologies, web casting, screen printing, computer system, computer graphics, digital photography, and digital production.
  • Broadcasting: Broadcasting prepares individuals to communicate dramatic information, ideas, moods and feelings through the design and production of various audio and video formats. This includes production of film and videos. This program includes instruction in the theory or radio, film, and video as well as film technology broadcasting equipment operation, production and direction, film editing, audio editing, cinematography, radio broadcasting, and sales and management.


BUSINESS ENTERPRISE
The Business Enterprise Academy courses focus on preparing students for either the workforce, college, or both. Business programs include academic subjects needed to meet the entrance requirements of four-year colleges and universities. They also include subjects that meet entry-level job requirements of employers in fields related to the program.
  • Office Assistant: The Office Assistant Pathway is designed to prepare students to perform the duties of general office assistants and related occupations. Students learn to key, format, and process business correspondence; operate computers and other office equipment; use word-processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, and presentation software; handle mail and the telephone, perform receptionist functions, and file and retrieve filed materials. Students also receive instruction in communication skills, business ethics and public relations.
  • Accounting: This course is a comprehensive study of generally accepted accounting principles in manual and computerized format to complete the steps of the accounting cycle for a service business owned as a sole proprietorship (Accounting 1), a retail trade business owned as a sole proprietorship (Accounting 2), and a departmentalized business (Accounting 3). Students will analyze and enter details of transactions from source documents into journals, post transactions to accounts, and complete a worksheet and financial statements. In addition, they will learn payroll procedures and prepare withholding. Social Security and other tax reports.
  • Marketing: This program is designed to teach students to perform one or more of the following marketing functions: selling, pricing, promotion, product/service management, distribution, financing, and marketing information management. This program will incorporate management, communication, computer, and problem solving skills. Students will work both independently and as part of a team. Students will operate a school store using the skills acquired in the marketing program.
  • Administrative Assistant: The Administrative Assistant Pathway is designed to prepare students to perform the duties of administrative assistants and/or secretaries, and related occupations. Students use speedwriting and also compose, key, format, proofread, and process business documents; operate dictation/transcription equipment and computers; use word processing. Spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, and presentation software; handle mail and the telephone, operate office equipment, and perform records management duties. The student will also acquire strong English and basic math skills as well as written and oral communication skills and business ethics and public relations.


ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY
The Engineering and Manufacturing Academy offers courses that prepare students for careers in the Trade and Industrial Technologies or Engineering Technologies Pathway. Within each pathway, students will have two scheduled options. The technical schedule focuses on competitive and employable skills for those wishing to acquire employment immediately upon graduation. The traditional schedule will enhance skills necessary for successful performance in post-secondary education or technical training.
  • Engineering Technologies: The Engineering Technologies Pathway prepares students to apply knowledge and skills in basic design, engineering, production, energy and transportation. Instruction includes classes in Drafting and Design, Electro-Mechanical Systems, Manufacturing and Industrial Systems. Successful students with technical preparation can obtain advanced placement and/or college credit.
  • Trade and Industrial Technologies: The Trade and Industrial Pathway encompasses the Building Trades, Auto Body, Automotive Technology, Electrical, Welding and PC Maintenance/Network Administration. School to work combined with post-secondary preparation will be the main focus of these programs.


HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES
Develop career opportunities with a concentration in medical and related human services. The program at Greater Johnstown High School offers courses of study which include challenging academic and skill oriented courses. Students have the opportunity to transition from high school directly into a college or university, technical or trade school, the military, or the world of work.
  • Child Care: Explore the stages of child development, safety and first aid, day care regulations, job opportunities, nutrition, guidance and management techniques, and personal care for children. Learn planning and teacher techniques for early childhood. Careers within this pathway include day care director, assistant teacher, teacher's aide, nursery school worker, and in-home day care server.
  • Health Careers: Discover a wide variety of highly employable health-related careers in this pathway. Among the career options available are physicians, nursing professionals, technicians, therapists, and medical support personnel. Developing practical medical skills opens the path for clinical experiences. We prepare GJHS students for entry-level or post-secondary education opportunities.
  • Social Services: Students can serve our community as they investigate careers dealing with families, individuals with special needs, people at risk, and the elderly. This pathway emphasizes exploring psychology, social work, teaching, legal and law enforcement professions. Pathway experiences may include job shadowing and cooperative learning situations.
  • Culinary Arts: Students can stir their interest with diverse career opportunities in restaurants, hotels, cafeterias, and other facilities. Enjoy learning the main functions of ordering, preparing, cooking, and serving meals. Experience the following in the GJHS restaurant: chef, cashier, cake decorator, waiter, server, and caterer. We emphasize nutrition and restaurant management as you prepare for entry-level positions or post secondary education.
  • Cosmetology: Be on the cutting edge of salon services. Learn to administer facials, manicures and pedicures, cutting, styling, coloring, and perming hair. Study the various beauty profession services, the commercials aspects of cosmetology and the requirements of state law. This pathway focuses on customer service and business procedures, while preparing you for state licensing.


NINTH GRADE SUCCESS ACADEMY
The Ninth Grade Success Academy will continue the tradition of supporting our students' transition to the high school. We are dedicated to helping them grow academically and socially, so they may succeed in their chosen career pathways and have pride in their accomplishments. We want each student to achieve success at a variety of levels. We encourage students to set high goals for themselves and demand excellence in all they do. Course offerings for 9th graders: Our students will take a variety of classes during the ninth grade year. These include English, Algebra, Geometry, Active Physics, World Cultures, Phys. Ed/Wellness, Foreign Languages, Electives, Freshman Seminar, and Strategic Reading. The Freshman Seminar course is deigned to help students understand what will be expected of them socially and academically as they move through high school toward graduation. The Strategic Reading course is designed to provide a print rich environment for students to continue to develop their reading skills.
  • Activities: Students have the option of choosing from several school activities which include Academy Newsletter, Yearbook/Memory Book, Care Team, Chess Club, Diversity and Harmony Club, Key Club, SADD, Pep Club, Forensics, Heritage Club, Mentoring Council, Student Leadership Council, Scholastic Quiz Team, Intramural Sports, Assemblies, and Band/Orchestra Chorus.
  • Sports: Choices are offered for our students to participate in GJHS athletics.
  • Award Recognition: The Ninth Grade students are provided award recognition. Awards are given for attendance, scholastic achievement, scholastic improvement, attitude and effort, and sports. Students of the Week and students of the Month are also recognized.
