Technology
Technology curriculum has long been a focus of the Greater Johnstown School District. The goal of the curriculum is to provide a foundation for a lifetime of technology use and continued learning, strengthening the future workforce. The curriculum includes the principles and theories of technology as well as hands-on use in a variety of disciplines.
Computers with Internet access have been made available throughout the District for grades K-12. Computers are in use in classrooms, lab environments and libraries. The computers are used for a multitude of educational disciplines including business, mathematics, science, English, social studies, and CAD. The computers are also available for general use, completion of homework and individual study.
Educational software is another aspect of the technology curriculum. A large number of educational software tools are employed within the District. These tools allow students of diverse learning methods and capabilities to be more fully engaged. Software tools cover the full spectrum of educational disciplines, positively affecting the learning process throughout each school day.
Beyond these curriculum-enhancing tools, the Greater Johnstown School District made a commitment to greatly increase the role of technology during the 2007 – 2008 school year and beyond. The work to enhance the educational process through the use of technology began during the summer of 2007 with a network redesign which included a migration to a more stable environment at both the network and desktop level. The increased security and stability have enabled an increased level of instruction via technology including the use of customized, Web-based academies and hands-on computer training.
The Greater Johnstown School District's computing environment is based on industry standards and best practices. An area of focus has been the ability to expand capabilities to take advantage of emerging educational technologies while maintaining a strong level of computer/network security. This approach has resulted in an environment that allows for full advantage to be taken of the District's participation in the Classrooms for the Future grant each of the past two years and the Enhancing Education Through Technology (EETT) grant. Technology within the classroom learning environment has been greatly enhanced through the implementation of laptops, wireless access and smart boards while maintaining a secure network environment.
Greater Johnstown is committed to a progressive integration and use of technology in the educational process, not only for increased learning opportunities across all educational disciplines and student capabilities, but to prepare the enrollment to be productive, contributing members of the future workforce.
